Many castles in Belgium came to life before the establishment of the Belgian nation in 1830. That is the case of today’s escapade: the Alden Biesen Castle, a magnificent Flemish heritage site located in Bilzen.
Alden Biesen was founded in 1120 by the Order of the Teutonic Knights, which was highly successful at the time and acquired several properties throughout Europe. Alden Biesen became the headquarters of the Biesen bailiwick. At its peak, between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Landcommandery developed into a luxury residence.
The French Revolution put an end to this prosperous period. All the properties of the Teutonic Order were publicly sold. Alden Biesen fell into private hands and disintegrated. To make matters worse, a fire ruined large parts of the castle in 1971. In 2000, Alden Biesen has completely restored thanks to the support of the Flemish region.
For both culture and nature lovers, a visit to Alden Biesen is highly recommended. You can admire the historical buildings, visit the church and admire the English and French gardens. A perfect family escapade.
Two years ago, this historical site gained a new life thanks to the brand new hotel Martin’s Rentmeesterij.
