Magnet Kitchens has released a new study using crowdsourced data, looking at where to find the world’s cheapest and most expensive bottles of wine in 2024. A list to keep on hand when travelling the world and feeling itchy to host a dinner party.
Overall, Magnet Kitchens was able to compare prices in 190 cities across the globe, using data from Numbeo. The prices listed are the average price one could expect to pay for a bottle while shopping (not to be confused with the price per bottle paid at a restaurant, which is generally much higher).
In order to establish the price for a bottle of wine, many factors are taken into account. Labour cost, production technique, taxes, transportation, demand and many more all play a role in the pricing process, explaining some of the steep differences.
1. Most expensive cities
The United States are omnipresent on the list of the 10 most expensive cities to buy a bottle of wine. General cost of living as well as taxes play an important role in the ranking. The only two non-American destinations in the top 10 are Launceston and Hobart, in Tasmania.
- New York, United States – $20
- Columbus, United States – $18
- San Francisco, United States – $17.75
- Oakland, United States – $17.75
- Philadelphia, United States – $17
- Launceston, Tasmania – $16.45
- Hobart, Tasmania – $16.45
- Washington, United States – $16
- Denver, United States – $16
- Tucson, United States – $15.50
2. Least expensive cities
Just like with the list of the most expensive cities, the one of the least expensive also has a clear winner. Spain seems like the place to go to buy a cheap bottle of wine, with six cities comprised in the top ten. But Cordoba isn’t the only cheapest place in the world to buy a bottle, as it shared the number one spot with Italy’s capital, Rome.
- Cordoba, Spain – $3.55
- Rome, Italy – $3.55
- Zaragoza, Spain – $3.82
- Murcia, Spain – $4.04
- Reggio Calabria, Italy – $4.37
- Toulon, France – $4.56
- Corunna, Spain – $4.91
- Malaga, Spain – $4.91
- Alicante, Spain – $4.91
- Taranto, Italy – $4.91
