While Disney presents the arrival of AI on its Disney+ platform as an exciting addition, fans are less thrilled about the novelty and are urging others to boycott the company. The online reactions are once again highlighting people’s widely differing opinions about AI-generated content and its impact on creatives.
Since the foundation of the company in 1923, creativity has been indispensable in all of Disney’s ventures. While hand-drawn animation is no longer its sole focus, Disney does employ a large number of creatives, working both on creating new images and on preserving the company’s now classic legacy.

Bob Iger knows people are already using AI to remix their characters. The new strategy? Don't sue them. Recruit them.

Generative AI and Disney
With the rise of AI-generated content, it now seems like even Disney won’t be spared the consequences of that trend. During the company’s fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 earnings conference call, CEO Bob Iger unveiled some novelties that will soon be arriving on Disney’s streaming platform Disney+, including a set of games following the company’s partnership with Epic Games.
However, it is another announcement that sparked outrage from Disney fans: the arrival of AI-generated user content.
“The other thing that we’re really excited about, that AI is going to give us the ability to do, is to provide users of Disney+ with a much more engaged experience, including the ability for them to create user-generated content and to consume user generated content – mostly short-form – from others”, Disney CEO Bob Iger said.

"We have been in some interesting conversations with some of the AI companies. I would characterize some of them as quite productive conversations as well. Seeking to not only protect the value of our IP, our creative engines, but also to… pic.twitter.com/V5uIihsFeG
While the CEO specified that during its conversations with AI companies, Disney was taking into account the issue of Intellectual Property, many are not convinced that AI-generated user content is the way to go. While some are concerned about creative job cuts, others are bracing themselves for the arrival of low-quality content on Disney+ in an era already defined by huge amounts of AI-generated slop online.
Following Bob Iger’s statement, many are now urging consumers to boycott Disney+. They are pointing out that other animation studios, including Illumination and Dreamworks, have denounced the use of generative AI and should thus receive the support of creative-minded fans.
One of those speaking up against the matter is Dana Terrace, creator of the Disney animated series The Owl House.
Another X-user called @farkingfangirl called the matter a disgrace, while calls to boycott Disney+ are all over the social media platform.
So far, Disney officials have not yet commented on the online outrage. Whether or not the reactions of fans and creators alike will change anything to their plans thus remains unclear.
