Forget digital nomadism. How about a nomadic retirement on a cruise ship? New cruise line Villa Vie Residences has launched a “Golden Passport” that allows passengers to enjoy life on the ocean waves … forever.
With only one ship in its fleet for now (the Odyssey, which in October 2024 set sail on a three-and-a-half-year, 425-port, around-the-world adventure), Villa Vie says its new proposition will eventually be available on all its cruises.
Dubbed the “Endless Horizons” programme (which perhaps does sound like a senior care facility), the scheme allows passengers to choose to own, lease, or rent a “Porthole” or “Ocean View” cabin, starting from $99,999 (around €85,000) for life, for those aged 90 and over. Would-be life-long voyagers aged between 55 and 60 will have to shell out more, up to $399,999 €334,000).
| Age | Deck 2 (Porthole) | Deck 3 (Porthole) | Deck 4 (Oceanview) | Deck 6 (Oceanview) |
| 55–59 | $299,999 | $329,999 | $369,999 | $399,999 |
| 60–64 | $279,999 | $309,999 | $349,999 | $379,999 |
| 65–69 | $249,999 | $279,999 | $319,999 | $349,999 |
| 70–74 | $219,999 | $249,999 | $289,999 | $319,999 |
| 75–79 | $189,999 | $219,999 | $259,999 | $289,999 |
| 80–84 | $159,999 | $189,999 | $229,999 | $259,999 |
| 85–89 | $129,999 | $159,999 | $199,999 | $229,999 |
| 90+ | $99,999 | $129,999 | $169,999 | $199,999 |
The “age-tiered pricing” makes living on a cruise ship “no longer just a dream for the few, but an attainable reality for many,” according to Mike Petterson, founder of Villa Vie Residences. “As people retire, one of their biggest fears is outliving their money. With the Golden Passport, that uncertainty disappears—one payment secures a lifetime of adventure,” he added.
The one-time payment includes alcoholic drinks with meals, dining, housekeeping, laundry, and Wi-Fi. The cruise line also points out that there are “no hidden costs”, so no additional charges for taxes, port fees, or other typical travel expenses.
Many retirees find that they have swapped “discovery for routine” and that “travel becomes complicated”, Villa Vie says. Medical insurance and reassurance while on the move is one of the factors that older people worry about, but the on-board package with Villa Vie includes an annual medical check-up, which may help to alleviate some of that stress.
While loneliness might be a concern for some, friends and family can come on board for €129-a-day (€110), and Villa Vie calls the cruise “a complete way of life, where community, and endless exploration meet.” Passengers can “forge friendships over sunset dinners, discover hidden markets with new neighbors, or simply breathe in the salt air from your private balcony,” the cruise line says.
Visiting 147 countries, the Odyssey will take passengers all around the world, from “the emerald peaks of Tahiti” to the “timeless streets of Lisbon”, and all that “without ever packing a suitcase.” When the itinerary is complete, Endless Horizons passengers can simply start all over again. Any duration and frequency of travel is permitted, with availability guaranteed if advance notice of 30 days or more is given.
