Even though feeling safe somewhere might well be one of the biggest conditions to be happy with where you live, for a lot of us, it doesn’t come naturally. It’s sad to say yet criminality still remains a big problem anno 2022 and it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon. Yet criminality isn’t the only factor we take into account when we judge the safety of a certain city or village. Things like fraud, drugs and corruption should be taken into account as well, consciously or unconsciously.

It’s pretty clear that in order to be able to relax and disconnect from everyday life, it certainly helps when you’re in a surrounding where you can be at ease, where you can go home at whatever time of night without having to look over your shoulder. Especially for those travelling alone, safety rates can be a pretty big item on the checklist when they decide where to go next. Yet where to find the information you need when deciding whether or not a place is safe to travel or move to?
Not bad, yet nowhere near the top
Numbéo can be a pretty handy tool when it comes to informing yourself about security levels all around the globe. The website keeps a real-time overview of the safest cities in the world as well as the most dangerous ones. In order to do so, they take into account user data – reviewers are asked about drug use, corruption levels, fraud, crime rates and the perceived safety on the streets at any time of day. Pretty handy if you’re looking for your next hometown or holiday destination, if you ask us.
While Belgium is nowhere near the top of the list, one Belgian city has slowly made its way into the top fifty and is thus the safest city in Belgium. No other than Ghent has made it to the 48th place so far, with a crime rate of 26,08%.
Other Belgian cities include Antwerp (39,10%), Brussels (54,12%) and Liège (59,84%). Ghent is clearly doing much better than its Belgian competitors, yet there’s still a long way to go to reach the top of the list. With a crime rate of just 11,27%, Abu Dhabi has firmly taken ahold of the first place in the ranking.
