Extreme weather events across vast areas of Southeast and South Asia have killed at least 1,140 people, with torrential rain and cyclonic storms leading to flooding and landslides that have prompted the evacuation of millions. With roads and trainlines blocked and infrastructure overwhelmed in some regions, visitors to Indonesia, northern Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and southern Thailand are being urged to check their travel arrangements, to exercise caution, and seek places of safety.
Thailand and Malaysia
In Thailand and Malaysia, the death toll is nearly 200, but millions are displaced. The worst-affected provinces are Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Trang, and Yala.
International flights to and from Bangkok and Phuket are reportedly operating on schedule. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has noted the risks of heavy rains and flooding, but has stopped short of advising against travel, meaning tourists may not be able to claim on insurance if they decide to cancel their trip.

Indonesia
Indonesia has suffered over 1,000 dead or missing. Authorities there have recognised the country’s unpreparedness, but emergency aid missions have been deployed, including two medical ships and three warships. Rescue operations could continue to be complicated due to forecasts of further heavy rain.
Sri Lanka
Similarly, Cyclone Ditwah and monsoon rains have resulted in over 700 dead or missing in Sri Lanka, where a state of emergency is in place, and officials have made pleas for international aid amid “the largest and most challenging natural disaster in our history.” Response missions from Bangladesh, India, Japan, and Pakistan are on the ground, and red flood and landslide warnings have been issued for a swathe of areas, including the Kelani River Valley, Badulla, Colombo, and Kandy. The Neelamba Dam is also said to be “at risk of collapse.”

Incoming passenger flights were diverted from Colombo to southern India at the height of the storm, and SriLankan Airlines has advised passengers to check the status of their flight before proceeding to the airport. With most passenger trains at a halt due to blocked or flooded lines, the Colombo – Katunayake Expressway is the best way to reach Bandaranaike International Airport.
In addition, for visitors to Sri Lanka, the Department of Immigration and Emigration has confirmed that visa “facilitation measures” are being put in place. “Foreigners who were scheduled to depart Sri Lanka on or after 28th November but were unable to do so due to flight cancellations or travel difficulties caused by the weather, will be exempted from visa extension fees and overstay penalties. This measure is intended to support travellers who experienced unavoidable delays beyond their control.”
