In Germany, there is a magical forest. A forest that was once occupied by empires, stories, and myths. Today it is home to one of the richest areas in ruins in the country. The Palatinate Forest is a low mountain region in southwest Germany, located in the Palatinate, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The forest is a designated natural park covering 1,771 km2 and its highest elevation is Kalmit (673 m). Together with the northern part of the adjacent Vosges in France, it constitutes the UNESCO-designed Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest forests in Europe.
Resistance and erosion of the different rock strata of the Palatine Forest with its variable hardness resulted in a low mountain landscape with a dense system, incised valleys, and a wide variety of hill forms.
