On Wednesday 30 July 2025 at 11.25 pm local time, a 8.8-magnitude earthquake has hit northeast Russia, more particularly the Kamchatka Peninsula. Locally, a tsunami measuring up to four meters was reported but the event has caused tsunami warnings for other regions across the world.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located just off the Kamchatka Peninsula, 119 kilometers east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. With its 8.8-magnitude, it is most likely the joint-sixth strongest ever recorded on Earth. The Kamchatka Peninsula is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically very active region where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are likely to happen.
On the Pensinsula, several people were injured and buildings got damaged due to the event and tsunami waves measuring up to four meters in height caused local flooding. The power grid also got damaged, leaving a large part of the region without electricity.
“I decided to leave the building. It felt like the walls could collapse any moment. The shaking lasted continuously for at least 3 minutes,” local resident Yaroslav (25) told Reuters.
Tsunami waves are defined as large and long ocean waves, caused by sudden events displacing large amounts of water. They usually travel quickly over the ocean but tend to slow down when approaching land, getting higher and higher as they do.

Japan
Elsewhere in the world, the earthquake in Russia has been cause for concern.
In Japan, tsunami alarms were sounded in coastal towns across the Pacific coast. Over 1.9 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes and the Fukushima nuclear plant was evacuated as well, as the 2011 tsunami had previously already caused a radioactive disaster.
In an interview with Breakfast presenter Wilfred Frost, professor of science policy at the University of Tokyo Kazuto Suzuki said that the 2011 tsunami, killing 18,000 people in Japan, taught the country of the importance to evacuate quickly in order to prevent disasters.
⚠️ Tsunami Warning: Japan’s East Coast

A powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off the Russian coast, north of Hokkaido, this morning. Tsunami waves are now moving south across the Pacific and may impact Japan’s eastern coastline.

At the time of writing, the first tsunami waves have been observed at Kuji Port in the Iwate prefecture in northeastern Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the first one measured 1.3 meters in height but the waves are growing.
Remarkably, a reissued 1999 manga called Watashi ga Mita Mirai (The Future I Saw) by Ryo Tatsuki foretold a catastrophe in Japan for the Summer of 2025. This sent regional tourism into freefall, scaling back their services and travellers across Asia cancelling trips.

United States
The US too has been on alert since the quake. According to president Donald Trump, a tsunami warning has been issued for Hawaii.
While at the time of writing, the largest waves seen travelling towards Hawaii measured about 180 centimeters (six feet), local authorities urged people to stay inside their homes and to keep off the road. When going outside, people should try to stay at least 30 meters above sea level or 3.2 kilometers inland. All flights to and from Maui’s Kahului Airport have been cancelled, with passengers sheltering in the building.
“Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit https://t.co/8TSxG5CIcz for the… pic.twitter.com/HOFX8RXPuV

“It’s not over yet: Initial wave impacts from the leading edge of the tsunami measured several feet at some monitoring stations, but ‘follow-up’ waves over the next several hours often are LARGER. Don’t return to evacuated areas until the Tsunami Warning is officially lifted,” said Hawaii’s governor Josh Green.
Oprah Winfrey, who owns a private road in Maui, Hawaii, has temporarily opened the road to facilitate evacuations.
A tsunami watch is also in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. People living on vessels in Moss Landing in California are urged to evacuate and helicopters are currently flying over the coast in Los Angeles, trying to warn beachgoers of the tsunami advisory that went into effect.

Other parts of the world
Officials in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Micronesia, and the Solomon Islands have all issued warnings, urging people to stay away from the coast. Parts of the Philippines, Indonesia, China, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Panama, and Taiwan also issued tsunami warnings, advisories, or watches.
