Sleeping in a treehouse – maybe even living in it – definitely sounds more like something you would see in a romantic movie or dream of as a kid. I personally used to fantasize for hours about how it would be to have such a house, and how I would decorate it. Think: a lot of small stairways, round windows and a bed from which you could look at the stars. Yet, living in the year 2020, everything is possible. Well, not everything perhaps, yet you know what I mean.
As a lot of people are seeking to spend more time outdoors, a variety of alternative holiday homes make their appearance. Especially since the emergence of COVID-19, we simply prefer to spend our time with just our loved ones somewhere far away amidst nature instead of traveling to a crowded city. One of the most romantic sleeping options these days definitely has to be the treehouse trend. They are popping up, out of nowhere as it seems, offering the perfect hideaway during these disturbing times. If you, just like me, are desperate for some quiet holidays, these might just be perfect for you.
1. Slô Escape, Belgium
Although we often imagine treehouses to be a bit cutesy and old-fashioned, Slô-Escape proves that they do not necessarily have to be. The six cabins hidden in the Belgian woods nearby Marche-en-Famenne have a very architecturally pleasing and minimalist outlook. As if that was not enough, they are also completely self-sustaining and therefore ideal for the sustainable traveler. Our personal favourite model has to be what they call ‘The Glass Cube’. This little cabin hangs about 4 metres above the ground and offers its residents a 360° view on the surrounding woodlands. It is perfect for couples or even when you just want to be alone for a couple of days. The 20 square meter-rooftop makes for the perfect hangout during those long summer evenings. If we could simply just copy-paste the interior of this cabin onto our own home, we would not think twice.
Prices start at €250 a night.

2. Cabane perchée Au Bois d’Emma & Loue, France
This little cabin in the French Pyrénées definitely looks more like what we imagined our treehouse would look like as a kid – except we did not count on the Jacuzzi. Perched on top of a 150 years-old oak tree and 10 meters above the ground in a natural park of 7 hectares, you could hardly ask for a more calming setting. It’s the perfect city-escape, whether you choose to go on a romantic trip or to take your kids with you. You could rent the sleeping cabin on itself – which would be pretty great already – yet the experience gets even better if you add the jacuzzi-part as well. And of course, it would not be France if you could not combine your stay with some delicious food. Although there are some restaurants nearby, we would recommend you to opt for one of their own dinner baskets instead. And why, yes, there are wine and even champagne available.
Prices start at €170 a night for two persons.

2. Treehotel, Sweden
If you want to be able to choose from some of the most spectacular treehouses in the whole wide world, have a look at Treehotel in Harads in Sweden. They have no less than seven different cabins on offer, all of them located amidst the Swedish pine woods. Whether you want to stay in a bird’s nest or in a UFO, everything is possible. Even if it is almost impossible to choose, we would probably go for the Mirrorcube if we had the chance. As the name already suggests, it is a cube. With mirrors on the outside. Because of that, the cabin almost disappears in its surroundings, making the whole experience a little out of this world. If you are concerned that all those shiny surfaces might make you a bit dizzy, do not worry, on the inside the cabin looks just like what you would expect from a Scandinavian treehouse. Stylish, simple, with a lot of wood and a very cozy vibe. Even though there is no kitchen in the cabin itself, you can enjoy a great dinner in the restaurant on-site.
Prices start at €450 a night for two persons.
