There are now free water fountains at Brussels Airport after the activist group “Free Tap Water In Belgium” conducted an intensive campaigned aimed at the reduction of plastic use at the airport.
In the past, 50 cl water bottles were available after the security check for €1 each. They were available beyond passenger screening in Connector (towards gates A) and at the beginning of gates B. Brussels Airport had decided to block access to the previously installed water fountains because of the risks linked to Covid-19.
The activist group ’Free Tap Water In Belgium’ is now encouraging travelers to bring their own bottles. This would reduce the use of plastic, especially the bottles that are offered on some flights. Given that more than 100ml of liquid may not go through security, several passengers opt to buy water bottles.
“We are conditioned to accept anything offered to us ‘for free’ when we travel on holiday, but in 2022 we should now kindly turn down these offers and not accept the plastic bottles simply because they are handed out for free,” Free Tap Water In Belgium stated.
Saying no to a water bottle may seem like a small drop in our plastic ocean, but it can inspire others to change their habits and start reducing the insane amount of plastic everywhere.

According to the Brussels Times, Belgium is the fourth largest exporter of plastic waste in the world, behind countries such as Japan, the US and France.
The water fountain is located near gate A45. It dispenses sparkling and hot water. The WWF charity box that used to be next to the 1-euro plastic bottles has been kept and individuals can still support the charity while refilling their own tumblers.
