On Monday June 15th, the European Commission launched the awaited online platform that provides up-to-date information regarding free movement and tourism in the EU. This is in line with the Commission’s recommendation last week to lift internal border controls.
The platform was announced by the Commission in its tourism and transport package in May as a measure to help people plan their travel plans during the summer. All of this while respecting the necessary health precautions. The platform provides information in the 24 official EU languages, and is based on the most recent available data provided by the member states.
Some of the information available includes data on borders, public health and safety measures, means of transport, travel restrictions. The UK made no request to participate in the platform.
The platform allows the user to select a destination and based on that choice, information will be provided on whether it is possible to enter or exit it for tourism and if mandatory quarantine or a medical certificate, such as a negative test, are necessary. More specific per country information ought to be provided by local sources such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs webpage.
Some countries are open to most other member states but maintain limited movement with those in a similar epidemiological situation.
The Commission has reported that travel restrictions ought to be lifted in a coordinated way based on objective criteria including the health situation, the ability to apply containment measures during travel. These measure would need to take into consideration the data provided by health authorities.
