Belgian flag carrier Brussels Airlines is looking to add a new “icon” to its fleet and, this time, the public will be able to design and vote for its outlook.
Since the introduction of the Belgian Icon concept in 2015, six designs have travelled the world. Rackham was the first to be introduced and pays tribute to the comic Tintin. Amare and Trident are currently flying and respectively honour music festival Tomorrowland and the national football teams Red Devils and Red Flames. Magritte, Aerosmurf and Bruegel have already retired as Belgian Icons.
For its seventh design, Brussels Airlines is consulting the public. Until 27 September, any Belgian or Belgium resident can enter the contest and submit their design, as long as the participant is over the age of 16. Like with all other Belgian Icons, the plane should represent Belgium in an original and artistic way.
“The design has to be something Belgium is known for, and Belgians are proud of, without entering too much into clichés. The next Belgian Icon will not feature beer, fries, or waffles, for example, but we love to showcase our culture, nature or history. As with all our previous Belgian Icons, the design must have a ‘wow-factor’ and inspire people to visit Belgium”, said Michel Moriaux, Head of Marketing at Brussels Airlines.
Brussels Airlines also has some practical tips for those wanting to submit their design:
- Download our aircraft template, your design guide.
- Use our existing Belgian Icons for inspiration. However, designs using current or past Belgian Icons are a no-no. Just like designs using brands, food and drinks.
- Create a whole new design with a Belgian twist. Something we’re all proud of. And above all, let your design tell a story, from nose to tail.
Every contestant can enter a maximum of three different designs. Once the contest is over, an internal jury will make a preselection of what they think are the best submissions. At the beginning of October, people will get a chance to vote for their favourite.
The best design will be converted into a technical drawing by a creative agency in collaboration with the winner and will then be featured on the livery of the next Belgian Icon. On top of that, the winner will receive one Business class duo ticket for a voyage within Europe, every year for the next five years.
