Stasher, the luggage storage network, has ranked 99 tourist attractions around the world using country-level and city-level data in key categories, such as TripAdvisor and Google reviews, quality of local accommodation, distance from the nearest international airport, tourist safety and TikTok popularity. Each attraction was given an overall score out of ten.
So what should be on your bucket list and what might be worth skipping? Let’s find out.
1. Top tourist attractions
The Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest is the world’s number one tourist attraction, according to Stasher’s study. The large neo-Gothic building overlooking the Danube River got a score of 7.34 out of 10. The Parliament’s average Google review score was 4.8/5, while the average rating for local accommodation’s quality was 8.6/10 on Booking.com. TikTok videos featuring the Hungarian building have been viewed 887.1m times and counting. Hungary also had a safety score of 1.4 out of 5, meaning that the place is considered very safe.
Disneyland Paris comes second with an overall score of 7.17 out of 10. TikTok posts featuring the theme park have been viewed 7.9 billion times, making it the most popular attraction on the platform. Local accommodations have an average rating of 8.6/10, and the Disneyland resort got a good 4.5/5-star average on Google Reviews.
Third on the list is the geo-thermal Blue Lagoon in Iceland, with a score of 7.15/10. With a Global Peace Index score of 1.1/5, Iceland is one of the safest countries to visit. The quality of local accommodation is also impressive and among the highest in the study (average rating of 9.2/10). Visitors’ reviews are also positive. Average score on Google Reviews was 4.6/5, while 80% of TripAdvisor reviews were either ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent.’
Plaza De España in Seville, Spain ranks fourth with an overall score of 7.13.
Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia ranked fifth on the list with a score of 7.04/10.
2. Worst tourist attractions
The Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles ranks in 99th position, scoring just 3.42/10. The Walk Of Fame was also at the bottom of the study in 2019. The world-renowned attraction received the lowest Google Reviews score (4/5). Additionally, the US has a global peace index of only 3.85, which contributed to dragging Hollywood Boulevard’s tourist hub down on the list. Tourist reviews describe their experiences as “dirty” and “unsafe”.
The second worst attraction in the study is the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey, one of the oldest shopping malls in the world. The Grand Bazaar scores poorly across the board, with an overall score of 3.48.
The Taj Mahal in India was the third worst attraction, with a score of 3.83. This attraction is particularly difficult to access through an international airport, with tourists facing a travel distance of 219 km.
Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida (overall score of 4.82) was the fourth worst one, followed by Lotte World in South Korea (overall score of 4.80).
