On a recent Qantas flight from Sydney to Tokyo, all passengers aboard have been shown an R-rated movie following in-flight entertainment issues. The airline has now apologised for the incident.
Due to technical issues during the flight, individual movie selection was not available. In an attempt to make the situation less annoying, passengers were asked for their preferred movie option. ‘Daddio’, an R-rated movie which came out in 2023, starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, came out as the frontrunner of the poll.
How exactly the movie, featuring explicit sexual material and scenes of graphic nudity, made it to the poll is unclear. However, for half an hour, all passengers of the plane, children included, got to see the movie. Turning the screen off or muting it was impossible, according to one of the passengers who took to Reddit to share their experience.
“It was impossible to pause, dim, or turn it off. Here’s the kicker. The movie they played was extremely inappropriate. It featured graphic nudity and a lot of sexting – the kind where you could literally read the texts on screen without needing headphones. It was super uncomfortable for everyone, especially with families and kids onboard. I’ve attached a few pics of the scenes (only from the sexting parts, no nudity)”, they wrote.
In a statement to news.com.au, the airline confirmed the movie wasn’t suitable to show on all screens. Qantas is now looking into the matter, saying ‘Daddio’ was eventually switched out for a more family-friendly pick.
“The movie was clearly not suitable to play for the whole flight and we sincerely apologise to customers for this experience,” a spokesperson for Qantas said. “All screens were changed to a family-friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare cases where individual movie selection isn’t possible. We are reviewing how the movie was selected.”
