The next edition of the free open-air film festival, “Bruxelles fait son cinéma”, will take place from July 1 to 15 at several sites around the Belgian capital. The festival will open with the film “Presque” at the Kasteel van Rivieren estate in Ganshoren. Screenings in Sint-Agatha-Berchem, Evere, Sint-Joost-ten-Node, Schaarbeek, Oudergem, Jette and Koekelberg are to follow.
Launched in 2001, “Bruxelles fait son cinéma” is an open-air cinema activity in different locations across Brussels. It carries and old tradition from Mediterranean countries.
For 22 years now, free outdoor screenings have been held in places, sometimes unknown, in various municipalities. A great opportunity to rediscover Brussels in all its diversity, and to recall, in a Mediterranean way, a tradition of conviviality: that of the neighborhood cinemas, which have almost all disappeared today.
This activity, initiated at the time under the impulse of the Minister in charge of culture at the French Community Commission (COCOF), quickly took shape as a continuation of the partnership of Libération Films Animation with the Mediterranean Film Festival of Brussels (hence the programming of films from Mediterranean countries).
These open-air screenings in various Brussels municipalities are an opportunity to liven up the capital and to discover its multicultural richness. The festival organizers acknowledge that the cohabitation between inhabitants of different origins is sometimes difficult, and thus this activity wants to be a meeting place where a better understanding of the other is promoted.
The films proposed aim at the discovery of a quality cinema by the largest possible audience. The activity also allows residents to see again on the big screen some films that have been shown for very short periods in theaters.
For people who don’t go to theaters much anymore, it’s an opportunity to find all the pleasure of a movie on the big screen, in neighborhoods without movie theaters, and moreover, in an unusual setting and a warm and friendly atmosphere.
“Bruxelles fait son cinema” is an opportunity to relax and meet people from the Brussels municipalities who do not have the chance to go on vacation abroad.
