Starting in December 2024, it will be easier to travel sustainably, efficiently, and on a budget within Spain. A new high-speed train will run from Barcelona to Malaga in under 6 hours, connecting the north and south of Spain.
This new connection will be an extension of Iryo’s low-cost private rail service. It will build upon Iryo’s Barcelona to Seville route, which launched in December 2023. One year later, travelers will be able to take a daily train as far south as Malaga. This will provide competition to Renfe’s existing premier AVE service, offering expanded timetables and cheaper fares.
Tickets for the Iryo Barcelona-Malaga route are already on sale. Prices start from 24€ for a single ticket in December, while Renfe’s fares start at 62€ for the same journey. Additionally, Iryo’s journey takes approximately 5 hours and 50 minutes, while Renfe’s takes up to 6 hours and 45 minutes.
Iryo’s new high-speed connection is scheduled to depart from Barcelona at 11:50 AM and arrive in Malaga at 5:42 PM. Trains from Malaga will depart at 11:35 AM and arrive at 5:37 PM. The high-speed train will make stops in Zaragoza, Madrid, and Cordoba along the way. There will be a total of 336,530 seats available on the new route.
“Two years after we started operations, we continue to work every day with the focus on improving the service and adding more and more frequencies to the current offer. Our aim is for more and more passengers to join the train and, after the success of our first cross route, we are now announcing this new Barcelona-Malaga connection which we hope will be equally well received”, stated Christian Ley, commercial director of Iryo.

Iryo not only makes it easier for train passengers to travel between the north and the south of Spain, but also competes with budget airlines like Ryanair. When booked in advance, tickets can be cheaper and travelling can be more convenient, as it is easier and less expensive to book your luggage. A small carry-on bag and a cabin suitcase are free when travelling with Iryo, while a large suitcase will cost you 5€ each way.
