National Geographic Traveller has unveiled its “Cool List 2024”, a compilation of 30 places and experiences that promise to captivate the adventurous spirit. The curated selection spans the globe, encompassing a diverse range of locales that promise unique experiences and cultural immersion.
With approximately half of the featured destinations located in Europe, topping the list are the Albanian Alps, a hidden gem offering breathtaking landscapes and a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts – “Europe’s rising star”, as referred to by National Geoographic. With increased accessibility through new air routes from Ryanair and Wizz Air, Albania is becoming a compelling destination, blending history, diverse landscapes and burgeoning tourism.
Nordland, Norway, enters the list of “Cool” for 2024 for its off-grid innovation with the opening of Six Senses Svart, the world’s first energy-positive hotel. Surrounded by glaciers and soaring peaks, the Arctic Circle region offers year-round adventures, from mountain biking and fishing to dog sledding. The European Capitals of Culture celebration in Bodø adds cultural flair to the region’s diverse offerings.
Scotland’s Galloway and Southern Ayrshire region, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, extends its protection for another decade. With an expanded area that includes the village of Alloway, this biosphere reserve showcases its diverse landscapes, from windswept slopes to dense forests. The region’s Biosphere Guides offer tours, providing insights into the cultural and natural wonders of the area. A true gem for nature lovers.
In the US, the list even includes whole states, such as New York and Texas. New York marks a milestone in 2024, commemorating a century of New York State Parks. In Texas, 2024 takes a celestial turn with a total solar eclipse on April 8, drawing attention to cities like Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio. The state’s Dark Sky Parks, including the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, promise unparalleled views of the astronomical spectacle.
Venturing to South America, the Iberá Wetlands in Argentina herald a wildlife renaissance. Once dominated by cattle ranches, this sub-tropical reserve now teems with giant anteaters, jaguars and soon-to-be-reintroduced giant river otters. The wetlands, nestled near the Iguazu Falls, become a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, offering sightings of capybaras, caimans and an array of bird species.
Hopping over to Africa, in Rwanda, Akagera National Park celebrates its 90th anniversary, showcasing conservation triumphs after being decimated post-civil war. The park’s restoration efforts include the reintroduction of lions, black rhinos and white rhinos, creating a thriving ecosystem.
The Himalayas in Sikkim, India, step into the limelight for those seeking adventure and breathtaking views. Nestled between Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, Sikkim offers trekking opportunities, mountain monasteries and vibrant festivals. With increased accessibility through direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata, Sikkim awaits travelers to explore its glaciers, rhododendron-clad hillside and Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain.
Victoria makes the list with Australia’s latest road trip sensation, the Great Victorian Bathing Trail, that beckons travelers to discover a unique blend of thermal springs and sea baths and the rich history of open-air bathing. Melbourne, Victoria’s state capital, serves as the pulsating heart of the trail, connecting six enchanting spots, each offering a distinct bathing experience.
