France may already have a vast collection of museums for tourists to choose from but the country doesn’t stop adding to its offer. Many openings are scheduled for this year, some of them more anticipated than others. Whether they concern modern art or the re-opening of landmarks, below is a selection of 5 museums opening their doors in 2024.
1. Musée Pierre Cardin, Paris
This August will see the opening of a third Pierre Cardin museum, this time in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. It will be located above the Pierre Cardin store in the Rue du Cirque and will retrace the history of the brand and its creator, through no less than 30,000 archive pieces and temporary exhibitions.
2. Fondation Bemberg, Toulouse
As far as French art goes, the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse – located in one of the most beautiful houses of the city – has it all. Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso… From sculptures to paintings and everything in between, this museum, opening on 2 February, should be on your radar if you’re ever in the neighbourhood.
3. Musée d’Art Moderne, Troyes
Even though this is a re-opening, the Musée d’Art Moderne de Troyes is not to be missed by modern art lovers. With a collection including works by Courbet, Rodin, Derain, Degas, Modigliani and Picasso, among others, Troyes starts welcoming visitors again on 16 April and can certainly compete with some of the better-known modern art museums out there.
4. Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris
Without a doubt the most anticipated museum (re-)opening of the year. After the fire that destroyed a big part of the Parisian cathedral, the Notre-Dame closed its doors for an extensive restoration and the result of that will be unveiled on 8 December.
