Lufthansa Group airlines have launched a new feature to improve baggage tracking efficiency, providing passengers with greater transparency and digital support throughout their journey. Now, when flying with Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings, travellers can securely share the location of their AirTag or other Find My network accessories with the airline’s tracing systems.
“The use of Apple AirTag data is one example of many ways in which we are continuously developing the customer journey of all our Group airlines thanks to innovative digital services,” said Dieter Vranckx, member of the Executive Board and Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group. Vranckx emphasized the company’s commitment to digital innovation, highlighting the role of the airline’s “Digital Hangar” team, consisting of around 1,000 experts dedicated to developing new digital solutions and providing assistance throughout the customer’s entire journey.
Oliver Schmitt, Head of the Lufthansa Group Digital Hangar, explained the company has been able to achieve “significant improvements” in baggage tracking over the past few months and the integration with AirTags will now further improve tracing efficiency. “Thanks to our app and website, passengers can now find solutions quickly and easily in the event of irregularities,” he said.
Apple AirTag is a small, Bluetooth-powered tracking device that helps users locate lost items like keys, wallets, or bags using the Find My app. Based on the extensive database of the Find My network, with more than one billion Apple devices, this tool assists in finding lost devices or items via end-to-end encryption, which maintains strict privacy measures. In a recent iOS 18.2 software update, Apple introduced the Share Item Location feature, allowing users to securely share the location of their AirTag or Find My network accessories with third parties, which may include airlines.
With the Find My app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, users can create a link to share an item’s location. When recipients open the link, they’ll see a website with an interactive map that updates automatically with the latest location and includes a timestamp of the most recent update. The shared location will be deactivated once the owner retrieves the item. It can also be manually turned off at any time, or it will automatically expire after seven days.
For Lufthansa Group, this initiative marks a significant step forward in their ongoing digital transformation, offering passengers improved control over their luggage and reducing the stress when dealing with lost or delayed baggage.
