On Sunday February 12th, India‘s Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 246-kilometer stretch of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which will be the country’s longest and most advanced highway. According to CNN, authorities in India reported that the government has invested about $13 billion into the project. The goal is to provide a faster link between the capital and five states: Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The first section alone cost $1.4 billion.
“The Delhi Mumbai Expressway is one of the most advanced expressways in the world which presents a grand picture of developing India,” Modi said. He underlined that its development is expected to boost India’s economic growth and investment.
The Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot route is expected to reduce the travel time between the cities of New Delhi and Jaipur from five to 3.5 hours and will give a major boost to economic development in the region.

The 1,386-km-long Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the western freight corridor will be two solid pillars of progress for the state of Rajastan and the country, the ruler said at the inauguration of the project.
The future route will pass through six states, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, and will connect major cities such as Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara and Surat. “The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor are going to become two strong pillars of progress for Rajasthan and the country,” prime minister Modi said.
It will also serve 93 economic nodes, 13 ports, eight major airports and eight multimodal logistics parks, along with connections to new air terminals. The expressway will improve connectivity between the capital New Delhi and the country’s so-called financial center and largest city, Bombay, also known as Mumbai.

When completed, it will reduce the distance between New Delhi and Mumbai by 12 percent, from 1,424 km to 1,242 km, while travel time will be halved from 24 hours to 12 hours.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will have a catalytic impact on the development of the surrounding regions, contributing greatly to the country’s economic transformation by creating new opportunities for logistics, warehousing, transportation, as well as other industries and services.
