The Portuguese city of Braga has been selected as the Host City of the XVI UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) Annual Conference in 2024. The announcement was made by Directror General Audrey Azoulay on the occasion of this year’s World Cities Day.
“This conference will give a central place to young people, both in debates as well as in actions”, Azoulay said in the announcing tweet.
The candidates made their presentations during this year’s edition, the XIV UCCN Annual Conference, which took place in Santos in July. Braga, UNESCO Creative City for Media Arts, and Dubai, UNESCO Creative City of Design, were the two candidates. The member cities then chose the winner in an online vote organised by the UCCN Secretariat.
A unique international platform for exchange, the UCCN Annual Conference brings together Creative Cities worldwide to foster culture and creativity enabled solutions to contemporary urban challenges.

Through the XVI UCCN Annual Conference, Braga aims to nurture international collaborations among young people. Revolving around the theme of “Bringing Youth to the Table for the Next Decade”, the Conference will provide member cities with a platform to share knowledge, experiences and good practices towards building the sustainable cities of tomorrow.
To this year’s edition, which marked the first time the Conference was held in Latin America and the Caribbean region, more than 220 city representatives took part, including mayors, municipal decision makers, professionals and other relevant stakeholders. Their aim was to further leverage culture and creativity to reinforce sustainable social and economic development in cities.
For next year’s edition of the UCCN Annual Conference, Istanbul was chosen as Host City. Like Braga’s competitor for 2024, Türkiye’s capital is a UNESCO Creative City of Design, next year’s goal being to strengthen the UCCN’s commitment to shaping “Future-proof Cities”.
