Belgian Mobility Minister has announced stricter standards to reduce noise pollution at Brussels Airport in Zaventem. The new measure aims to push airlines to modernize their fleets quicker, said Belgium’s Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet.
I consider it imperative to review the maximum allowable noise quota at Brussels Airport to encourage airlines to renew their fleets as soon as possible.
Georges Gilkinet, Minister of Mobility of Belgium
Several studies have shown that Brussels residents are heavily impacted by airport’s noise pollution. Hence, the goal is to reduce the noise of air traffic, in particular during sensitive times of the day, including early morning, evenings and nights, weekends and holidays.
The minister explained that there will be new terminal charges levied by the air traffic controller Skeyes. So far, the minister has not provided any further details regarding the charges or how they will be calculated.
The priority of this measure is to improve the quality of life and sleep of people living near the airport and reduce noise pollution. The new system is scheduled to come into force in early 2023.
