In an effort to provide a more affordable train service between Brussels and Paris, Belgian national rail operator SNCB is launching a new connection between the two capitals called Eurocity. The train will make a single stop en route, in the Belgian town of Mons, and the journey will take three to four hours. Even though initially the service will only be available during the 2024 Olympics, the offer is expected to become permanent later this year.
“We announced in July last year that we are exploring a connection to Paris via classic railway lines, as this is already our most popular destination”, SNCB spokesperson Dimitri Timmermans told The Brussels Times. “We are looking to launch this from the end of 2024. But this summer, we expect passenger numbers to be even higher than usual, which is why we are already temporarily launching the service.”
Direct train connections between Brussels and Paris is currently only available through the high-speed rail service of TGV or Eurostar. However, with the Olympic and Paralympic games this summer, there is high demand for a more affordable alternative.
“The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris this summer will give thousands of Belgians a front-row seat to support their favourite athletes”, said Belgian Mobility Minister Georges Gilkinet. “Opting for the train means opting for the most sustainable, relaxing, safe and efficient way to travel to this global sporting event.”
Tickets went on sale Tuesday, 19 March. During the Olympics, from 24 July until 11 August, two trains per day will be assuring the Eurocity connection between Brussels and Paris. During the Paralympics, from 28 August until 8 September, just one train will be available. Prices stratr from €34 for second-class and €49 for first-class for a one-way ticket.
