On 27 October 2025, the city of Amsterdam will be celebrating its 750th anniversary. In the lead-up to that celebration, a lot has been going on in the Dutch capital over the last year. With the closing event approaching, we made a selection of selection of happenings you cannot miss.
1. Amsterdam Modestad – until 28 September 2025
As one of the leading fashion cities, 750 years of Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to fashion. Until 28 September, ten leading illustrators, from established icons to emerging talents, share their personal perspectives on Amsterdam as a creative fashion capital during the Fashion Illustration Expo Amsterdam Modestad. The exhibition is curated by Anneke Krull, founder of I Love Illustration Gallery.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 am to 6:00 pm
2. The Underground Camera – until 2 October 2025
What did Amsterdam look like during the German occupation? For Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, the city’s photography museum concentrates on the members of The Underground Camera. A resistance group of photographers led by Fritz Kahlenberg and Tonny van Renterghem recorded life under German occupation, even though taking photographs on the street was prohibited at that time, preserving a unique image of occupied Amsterdam during the last months of the war.
Opening hours: every day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Thursday and Friday until 9:00 pm
3. TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2025 – 19 October 2025
In 2025, Amsterdam doesn’t just celebrate its 750th anniversary – the Amsterdam Marathon will also be hosting its 50th edition. The iconic Olympic Stadium from 1928, the Rijksmuseum, the Vondelpark, the Amstel, and the Heineken Experience: participants get to enjoy the highlights of the city under a whole new light. Whether you participate in the full marathon, half marathon, or 7.5 kilometre route, it promises to be an unforgettable day.
Event hours: 9:30 am to 5:00 pm
4. 75 hours of celebrations for the capital’s birthday – 27 October 2025
The closing hours of Amsterdam’s anniversary year won’t go by unnoticed. From shared meals to a story festival, from a cake with 7,500 pieces to The Great Amsterdam Quiz and finally the closing musical performances: there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Address: throughout the city
5. The Roof of Amsterdam – until 2 November 2025
As the spire on the roof of the Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam will be restored during 2025, a large platform was placed on the roof for the renovation process. As part of 750 years Amsterdam, travellers now have the unique opportunity to climb to the top of this monument for an unforgettable view over Amsterdam – make sure to spot the Westerkerk, the Central Station, the Royal Palace Amsterdam, the Zuidas and the A’DAM Tower. The platform can be reached via a 17th-century stairwell on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, counting precisely 216 steps.
Opening hours: open daily from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
Amsterdam’s anniversary year is coming to an end but both locals and tourists will find something to their liking on the programme over the coming weeks. Other activities, including interactive walks, art talks, and sculpture exhibitions can be found through the Amsterdam750 agenda.
