Extreme weather events across vast areas of Southeast and South Asia have killed at least 1,140 people, with torrential rain and cyclonic storms leading to flooding and landslides that have prompted the evacuation of millions. With roads and trainlines blocked and infrastructure overwhelmed in some regions, visitors to Indonesia, northern Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and southern Thailand are being urged to check their travel arrangements, to exercise caution, and seek places of safety.
Thailand and Malaysia
In Thailand and Malaysia, the death toll is nearly 200, but millions are displaced. The worst-affected provinces are Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Phatthalung, Satun, Songkhla, Trang, and Yala.
International flights to and from Bangkok and Phuket are reportedly operating on schedule. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has noted the risks of heavy rains and flooding, but has stopped short of advising against travel, meaning tourists may not be able to claim on insurance if they decide to cancel their trip.
