When it comes to out of the ordinary buildings, Brussels has got quite the few. From Art Nouveau houses to the Atomium and everything in between: there’s something out there for everyone and every taste. Sadly, much of those interesting buildings can’t be visited and are therefore to be admired from outside only. And sometimes, they even get abandoned and lay there in decay, waiting for someone to give them a new life. That’s exactly what happened to a 130-year old water tower situated in the Bois de la Cambre park in Brussels.
If you’re living in Brussels, you’ve probably noticed them before. In the Bois de la Cambre park there are two water towers side to side: an older and smaller one, dating back to 1879 (making it one of the oldest in Belgium), and a bigger one, dating back to 1890. They make quite the sight, one measuring 15 meters in height and the second a whopping 30 meters. No longer in use, they were bound to be repurposed one day. The smaller one was turned into an architect’s office, the other water tower laid there untouched, patiently waiting for its destiny.
And now that destiny has been found, as the tower has been turned into Le Phare. What’s that, you ask? Well, the answer isn’t that simple. “We wanted to create a multifunctional space we could repurpose each and every time. This winter, for example, we’re imagining a Christmas market with a multitude of Brussels artisans, mulled wine and a Christmas tree stand”, Louis Stulemeijer, one of the people behind the project, told Le Soir. Whether you want to organize a food truck festival, a wedding or a team building afternoon: pretty much anything is imaginable at Le Phare.
If you’re more into dancing, there’s more good news. Twice a month, the water tower will open its doors to the public for a disco evening. “We wanted first and foremost to create a (family) friendly place. That means no new techno scene yet a willingness to mix all different music styles, from disco over house to more commercial music. Of course, we’d like to focus on Belgium DJ’s to come and mix at Le Phare”, Louis continued. So if you’re looking for a great location or for your next night out, keep an eye on their Instagram page.
