Three thirds of the world’s billionaires live in just 15 countries around the world and almost one third live in only 16 cities around the world, according to Altrata’s Billionaire Census 2023. The report uses Wealth-X data to examine billionaires’ changes in the net worth and total population by region and city.
Compared to 2021, the total population of billionaires in the world fell by 3.5% to 3,194 individuals, while their cumulative net worth decreased by 5.5% to $11.1 trillion. The US and China have the highest populations of billionaires. Germany ranks third, despite not having any cities featured among the top 16 where the wealthy prefer to live.
Moreover, North America’s billionaire population declined for the first time in four years, but New York still remains the favourite home for most of the wealthy, despite losing two billionaires compared to the previous year.
Most of the top 16 cities had fewer billionaires in 2022 than in 2021. Dubai and Istanbul retained the same population, Moscow welcomed another billionaire, while Singapore made the strongest gains, with four new billionaires.
1. New York City
There were 136 billionaires living in New York City in 2022, two fewer than the previous year.
2. Hong Kong
Hong Kong had 112 billionaires in 2022, two fewer than in 2021.
3. San Francisco
There were 84 billionaires living in San Francisco in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
4. Moscow
There were 76 billionaires living in Moscow in 2022, one more than in 2021.
5. London
London had 75 billionaires in 2022, two fewer than in 2021.
6. Beijing
There were 61 billionaires living in Beijing in 2022, two fewer than the previous year.
7. Los Angeles
There were 58 billionaires living in Los Angeles in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
8. Singapore
Singapore had 54 billionaires in 2022, four more than in 2021.
9. Shenzhen
Shenzhen had 42 billionaires in 2022, two fewer than in 2021.
10. Mumbai
There were 39 billionaires living in Mumbai in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
11. Dubai
There were 38 billionaires living in Dubai in 2022, the same as in 2021.
12. Hangzhou
There were 34 billionaires living in Hangzhou in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
13. Istanbul
Istanbul had 33 billionaires in 2022, the same as in 2021.
14. Sao Paolo
There were 33 billionaires living in Sao Paolo in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
15. Chicago
There were 32 billionaires living in Chicago in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
16. Paris
There were 32 billionaires living in Paris in 2022, only one having moved out since 2021.
