British authorities are working on a contingency plan to transport Covid-19 vaccines to the United Kingdom using military planes. This “air corridor” seems the most reliable option, British officials reported. The contingency plan takes on additional relevance because of Brexit.
Several million doses of Covid-19 vaccines produced in Puurs-Sint-Amands, Belgium could be delivered to the United Kingdom using military planes, The Guardian reported on December 5th, confirming that on the basis of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and senior sources at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), contacts have already been made and that this could be an option from the 1st of January 2021. All these preparations are being taken in case congestion is experienced on road, rail and sea routes.
Some 800,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine have already been transported via the Channel Tunnel. No less than 5 million doses are expected to arrive in the UK by the end of the year.
