The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2022 have been revealed. The World’s 50 Best is an initiative created in 2002. The team comprises of 1,080 culinary experts that follow a structured and audited voting procedure to provide the annual list of the world’s finest restaurants, offering a “snapshot of some of the best destinations for unique culinary experiences, in addition to being a barometer for global gastronomic trends”.
After coming in second place last year, Copenhagen’s Geranium has topped the list in 2022. The restaurant has a meat free, Scandinavian inspired menu that always adapts to the season to serve the best and freshest ingredients. “Many restaurants align their menu to the changing seasons, but Geranium takes it to the next level”, reads the World’s 50 Best Restaurants review.
Chef Rasmus Kofoed is the first Danish chef to receive 3 Michelin starts, which were awarded to Geranium in 2016. He is also keen on maintain a work life balance for himself and the rest of the employees so the restaurant, which sits at the 8th floor of the national football stadium, is only opened 4 days a week.
As restaurants can only receive the grand prize once, Geranium will now join its neighbour Noma, who won last year, in a separate programme called Best of the Best. The group comprises all the restaurants that have topped the annual poll of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants over its 18-year history, which are no longer eligible to be voted on new editions of the list.
Other restaurants that did better this year than last include Central, in Lima, that advanced from 4th to 2nd place. Madrid,s Diverxo climbed up to 4th place, while Brazil’s A Casa do Porco went from 17th to 7th. Mexico City’s Quintonil also had an impressive ascent, from 27th all the way up to 9th place, while, in 12th place, Italy’s Uliassi was the Highest New Entry.
