The first-ever Harry Potter Studio Tour in China is set to open in Shanghai, offering Potterheads the chance to explore iconic props from the films and immerse themselves in famous locations such as Diagon Alley, the Ministry of Magic, and Platform 9¾, among others.
In collaboration with Jinjiang International, a Shanghai-based tourism and hospitality company, the project will span 53,000 square metres and is estimated to cost over €300 million. Visitors can expect to spend approximately half a day exploring the attraction. “This is the first landing of the Harry Potter Studio Tour in China,” Warner Bros. Discovery announced in a post on the Chinese social media platform WeChat.
In its own statement, Jinjiang International described the attraction as a “splendid and unsurpassed behind-the-scenes” experience for fans. This will be the third Harry Potter Studio Tour worldwide, following the original in London and another in Tokyo. The Shanghai location is expected to be the largest of the three, aiming to attract both domestic visitors and international tourists from across Asia.

While specific details about the upcoming studio remain scarce, the project is still undergoing regulatory approval. Additionally, the Harry Potter Studio Tour has been confirmed as part of the newly renovated Jinjiang Action Park, another amusement park in Shanghai. The park has been closed for renovations since 26 January and is scheduled to reopen in 2027, with the Harry Potter immersive experience as a central highlight.
The location is particularly convenient, just 20 kilometres from Hongqiao International Airport. Historically, Jinjiang Action Park has focused on local characters, but following renovations, the aim is to appeal to a broader audience and attract more visitors. To manage crowd flow and enhance the experience, the attraction will introduce a reservation system, requiring guests to book visits in advance for specific dates and time slots.
A key aspect of the Shanghai Harry Potter Studio Tour is that 90% of the attractions will be indoors, ensuring an enjoyable experience regardless of weather conditions.
Until now, the park’s rides and attractions have primarily featured Chinese characters. However, Harry Potter enjoys immense popularity in China, where numerous themed cafés, bars, and restaurants have emerged. Additionally, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Beijing has further fueled enthusiasm for the franchise. The book’s hero is known as 哈利·波特 (Hālì Bōtè) in Mandarin.
With a strong fan base and a growing demand for immersive experiences, the Shanghai Harry Potter Studio Tour is expected to become a major attraction, drawing visitors from across China and beyond.
