Mask Architects has unveiled the designs for the ONYX H2-BO 85, an 85-meter superyacht propelled by onboard hydrogen production. With a fusion of luxury and eco-consciousness, the vessel is not only redefining sustainability in the yachting sphere but also offering opulent amenities.

Revolutionizing the traditional propulsion system, the ONYX H2-BO 85 combines hydrogen production through electrolysis with hydroelectric turbines.
“Hydroelectric turbines efficiently capture the kinetic energy of surrounding water, outperforming conventional generators in terms of energy efficiency. This clean energy approach enables ONYX H2-BO 85 to generate and store hydrogen onboard, eliminating the need for large fuel reserves and providing easily accessible energy during low-speed sailing or anchoring”, the company emphasized on its website.
By drawing seawater directly from its surroundings and subjecting it to electrolysis, after desalination, the yacht efficiently splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen gases. The hydrogen is then stored, ready to serve as a fuel source for engines, generators, or fuel cells, making the superyacht self-sufficient and reducing its reliance on external resources.

“In response to the maritime industry’s growing emphasis on sustainability and emission reduction, Mask Architects’ ONYX H2-BO 85 is the world’s first superyacht to be powered by its own hydrogen production. Consequently, this reduces the yacht’s reliance on fossil fuels, resulting in substantial long-term cost savings amid rising fuel prices and stable hydropower costs”, the company highlighted.
The innovative approach ensures sustainable power generation during shorter cruising distances while significantly minimizing the vessel’s environmental impact. By integrating a hydrogen production system fueled by hydroelectric turbines, the yacht effectively eliminates local emissions, thereby enhancing the marine environment and reducing its ecological footprint during navigation.
“In an era of increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the integration of an onboard hydrogen production system underscores Mask Architects’ unwavering commitment to sustainability. ONYX H2-BO 85 is positioned to lead the industry towards a greener future, aligning itself with the most rigorous environmental standards”, the company stated.

As for the design, the interior of the ONYX H2-BO 85 is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship. The superyacht’s design incorporates a range of luxurious features while maintaining its commitment to sustainability. The ONYX H2-BO 85 offers spacious and well-appointed interiors, providing a comfortable, inviting and opulent experience for its guests, while the vessel’s exterior design is sleek and modern.
