According to Travel Weekly Asia, the Civil Aviation Ministry of India announced on Twitter that the country has agreed to establish an ‘air travel bubble’ with Sri Lanka. The agreement would become now the sixth of its kind in the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation).
Similar agreements include those signed with Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Iraq, Japan, Kenya, Kuwait, Maldives, Nepal, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Russia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Ukraine, UAE, UK, US and Uzbekistan. The singing of the “travel bubble” would see Sri Lanka become an important destination for Indian travelers.
We believe the travel bubble between India and Sri Lanka will significantly help our tourism sector
Kimarli Fernando, chairperson of Sri Lanka Tourism
Recent numbers show that tourists from India have chosen The Maldives as their main destination since the island nation reopened to international tourists in July of 2020.
“Sri Lanka has been open for over two months now, and our bio-secure bubble has proven to be very effective,” said Kimarli Fernando, chairperson of Sri Lanka Tourism. “We look forward to welcoming guests from India, so that they can experience Sri Lanka safely.”
On the 21st of January of this year, Sri Lanka reopened its doors to international tourists. Visitors may be excepted from quarantine as long as they stay within a travel bubble of selected hotels and sites.
“Given the product diversity that we offer in terms of tea, safari, culture and more, this will be a game changer for Sri Lanka,” said Chamindra Goonewardene, director of sales and marketing at Resplendent Ceylon.
