Brazilian carrier GOL Airlines will start flying nonstop between New York City (JFK) and Rio de Janeiro (GIG) this summer. The new route begins on 8 July 2026, with flights operating three times per week. Travellers can now fly directly between these two cities without layovers, saving time and stress. One-way fares start at around $479 (€415), and tickets are available on GOL’s website and app. This route marks a milestone, as it is GOL’s first-ever long-haul service and its first U.S. destination, signalling a significant shift in the airline’s strategy.
Flights depart in the evening from New York and arrive in Rio the next morning, making it a convenient red-eye option for travellers. The return flight follows the same pattern, leaving Rio at night and landing in New York the next morning. The airline will operate Airbus A330, which are used for intercontinental flights because they can carry more passengers, provide extra amenities, and fly longer distances without stopping. Some flights feature INSIGNIA business class, offering lie-flat beds and three-course meals for travellers who want to arrive fully rested. The nonstop journey lasts just under 10 hours.
GOL was founded in 2001 as a low-cost carrier, positioning itself as a pioneer of affordable air travel in Brazil. The airline built its model around operational efficiency, rapid turnaround times, and high-frequency domestic services, operating an all-Boeing 737 fleet. These narrow-body aircraft, designed for short- and medium-haul routes, require refuelling for longer journeys. Over more than two decades, GOL became known for reliable operations, competitive pricing, and service innovations such as mobile check-in.
Introducing the new Airbus A330-900 widebody jets allows GOL to fly longer distances and carry nearly 300 passengers in comfort. The larger aircraft will also support GOL’s planned transatlantic flights from Rio to Paris and Lisbon later in 2026, with potential future destinations like London and Porto. For European travellers, this means more direct access to Brazil, avoiding lengthy layovers in connecting cities.
Long-haul flights are unusual for low-cost carriers because they involve higher operating costs, more complex crew scheduling, and longer turnaround times. Low-cost airlines usually rely on short flights with quick turnarounds to keep fares low and planes flying as much as possible. Entering international, long-distance routes requires larger aircraft, more fuel, and additional staff, which makes the economics more challenging. GOL’s move into this market demonstrates its ambition to become a global carrier, connecting South America with North America and Europe more efficiently.
Rio de Janeiro continues to grow as a top travel destination. Last year, the city welcomed 12.5 million tourists, including 2.1 million international visitors, representing nearly a 45% increase in foreign travellers. Highlights include the world-famous Copacabana Beach, Christ the Redeemer statue, and scenic hiking trails with panoramic city views.
Travellers can also enjoy the city’s vibrant music scene, including samba clubs and live performances, as well as traditional Brazilian cuisine at local markets and restaurants. Art lovers can explore museums and cultural centres showcasing Brazil’s history and contemporary culture. The nonstop flights allow visitors to maximise their time exploring these attractions without worrying about long layovers or multiple connections.
The nonstop flights make travel between New York and Rio more convenient and comfortable. This route is the first step in GOL’s plan to connect Brazil with major global hubs, offering new opportunities for travellers from the U.S. and Europe. By entering long-haul service, GOL potentially joins other low-cost carriers that have successfully expanded into international markets.
