According to the Belgian expert Pierre Van Damme, Europe is now facing a second wave of coronavirus. The epidemiologist told the Flemish news outlet VTM that infections are increasing in many European areas. Until a few weeks ago, Europe was doing pretty well and the situation seemed to be under control. However, according to Van Damme, it now appears that we are loosing control of the virus again.
According to the epidemiologist, this second wave has been caused by loose lockdown rules and too relaxed measures. “Now we have to overcome this challenge again,” he asserted. “We need to keep in mind that we have to strictly follow all measures, otherwise our past efforts will be wasted.”
Belgium’s health institute Sciensano is supposed to restart publishing the daily figures, in addition to the seven-day average. “At the end of our first wave, the average was fine and it systematically decreased. But now it is increasing again,” the expert stated.
The release of daily figures is crucial for citizens because it allows them to be aware of the current situation. There have been over 100 infections for a few days in a row. “This is an immediate signal,” Van Damme warned. “The virus is still here.”
