Amsterdam Schiphol is partnering with Pangiam and Google to support the screening of luggage with Artificial Intelligence.
When properly staffed, security at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is one of the smoothest in Europe. Thanks to its CT (Computed Tomography) scanners, passengers are allowed to keep both liquids and electronics in their hand luggage, making the entire process smoother and faster.
Now, the airport is working on a new way to assist airport security staff and speed up the process even further.
On Monday, Dutch Airport Management Company Royal Schiphol Group announced a partnership with Pangiam, a security technology company that would develop a way to screen hand luggage using AI. Supported by Google Cloud, the Artificial Intelligence technology and machine learning models will use algorithms to analyze images and identify prohibited items and other security threats. The models have been trained to detect prohibited items in real time as bags pass through scanning equipment.
The AI project, named Project DARTMOUTH, will use technology that can be incorporated into existing hardware and equipment, such as its CT scans, as well as in combination with other software.
According to Philip van Noort, Director Security at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the collaboration with Pangiam will “contribute to more comfort for travelers thanks to secure and faster hand baggage screening.”

Project DARTMOUTH will first be tested on a smaller scale. It will then be rolled out across the operations if trials are successful and if it meets all European regulations. “This collaboration allows us to bring the benefits of artificial intelligence to the security checkpoint and improve the process,” said Alexis Long, Head of Project DARTMOUTH at Pangiam.
The project is part of Amsterdam Schiphol’s program to speed up innovation and development of in-house and partner technology.
