British airports are bracing themselves for what could be a record-breaking, busy ending to an already very busy year. The Civil Aviation Authority has issued a warning for all those who are planning on travelling throughout December 2025.
2025 has been a good year for the aviation industry in the United Kingdom. Between July and September 2025, some 90.2 million passengers passed through the British airports, a rise of 2% compared with the same period in 2024. The Civil Aviation Authority expects the total number of passengers for the year to exceed 300 million for the first time in history, whereas 295 million travellers passed through British airports in 2024. Palma de Mallorca, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Alicante were the most popular destinations.
Moreover, while the passenger numbers are rising, punctuality is also improving. In the third quarter of 2025, 62% of flights arrived or departed within 15 minutes of their schedule. In 2024, this number amounted to 57%. However, punctuality levels remain below pre-pandemic levels, with 69% of flights arriving or departing within 15 minutes of their schedule during the same period in 2019.

For December 2025, the Civil Aviation Authority expects the total number of passengers to exceed last year’s 22 million, thus setting a new record. Over 7 million of those are set to travel through Heathrow’s four terminals. Meanwhile, 2,500 trains throughout the United Kingdom will be impacted by rail works, which will undoubtedly force some Brits who had planned on taking the train to opt for a plane instead.
With all that in mind, the Civil Aviation Authority has issued a warning for passengers travelling over the coming month.
“We now have more people flying than ever before and are on track for the biggest Christmas getaway in history. With high passenger numbers and the potential for bad weather that winter brings, make sure you check for disruption, including on your route to the airport. Ahead of travelling, we encourage people to plan their packing to avoid delays at security and know their rights when things go wrong”, said Selina Chadha, group director for consumers and markets at the CAA.

Air travel in the UK has been on the rise for a while, and massive infrastructure works are on the way in order to allow the country to grow further. Civil Aviation Authority’s projected numbers further underline their importance.
“We know Britain wants to fly. Airports and airlines nationwide reported their busiest summer yet, as record numbers of passengers head off on business trips and holidays. As another busy festive period kicks off, we’ve secured the sector’s future. Getting expansion off the ground at Luton, Gatwick and Heathrow, and redesigning our airways – to keep Britain connected, support jobs and power economic growth”, stated aviation minister Keir Mather.
Throughout the world, airports are increasing their capacity in order to be able to respond to a growing demand for air travel. Aside from Luton, Gatwick, and Heathrow, Dubai and Chicago are among those cities planning an expansion.
