Running could be difficult. Not everyone finds it enjoyable. However, for those who find joy in this endeavour, it can also be a test of endurance. And crossing the line is not all, marathons are also about immersing into the landscape and experiencing a course that enhances the journey through some of the most unique places in the world.
1. Great Wall Marathon
One such race is the Great Wall Marathon in China, which takes participants on a remarkable journey through Chinese history and stunning landscapes. This marathon is not only a physical challenge but a cultural adventure, offering runners the chance to explore traditional Chinese towns and the awe-inspiring architecture of the Great Wall itself.
The marathon goes on the Great Wall of China just for a part of the competition. This short section is 5,146 steps, with ascents and descents of more than 300 metres. The start and the end are in Huangyaguan, located about 130 kilometres north-east of Beijing. The full distance of the marathon is 42.2 kilometres. There are options for half a marathon which is 21.1 kilometres, and beginners can partake in the fun run which is only 8.5 km.
2. Jungle Marathon
The Jungle Marathon is an experience through an extremely dangerous terrain and weather. The 200+km competition includes snakes, swamps, mosquitos, spiders, wasps, and other animals.
Runners have six days to pass through the jungle terrain on trails and paths usually only available by boat. But despite the difficulties, this marathon is beautiful. It takes place in Manu National Park in Peru and ends at a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Runners experience the cloud forest running from the Andes mountains to the Madre de Dios River.
3. The 4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series
The 4 Deserts Ultramarathon takes place in four deserts across the globe. Participants have to run almost 250 km over several days in each self-supported ultramarathon, running near salt lakes, through sand dunes, and past an active volcano. Competitors find themselves immersed in ancient cultures and surrounded by picturesque scenery and indigenous wildlife.
The ultramarathon takes place in the Atacama Crossing in Chile, the Last Desert in Antarctica, the Namib Race in Namibia, and the Gobi March in China. Although participants are only provided with water and a tent, the staff experienced in hiking and marathons is there to support them if needed.
4. North Pole Marathon
This is the only running event that does not take place on the mainland. Contestants run on 3,600-metre-deep ice. It offers a landscape of endless white snow and vast icy plains. Participants can not only see polar bears, but they also get the opportunity to run on moving ice.
The marathon is 42 km and encompasses an individual’s competition with male and female divisions, and a team competition for teams of three or more. The course of this marathon is guarded by hunters because of the threat of polar beat attacks.
5. El Cruce Ultramaratón Patagonia
El Cruce was born with the aim to cross the Andes, connecting Argentina and Chile. Since the Andes offer various passes through which the two countries can be connected, the route changes every year.
The locations where the marathon takes place are breathtaking. Runners traverse mountains and volcanoes, lakes, and snowy peaks.
