Located just outside of Brussels, Tervuren is the perfect destination to escape the city buzz at any time of year. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing walk in the forest on a hot summer’s day or a rainy Sunday stroll through the museum, thanks to Tram 44, Tervuren is just a stone’s throw away. We’ve selected five spots to enjoy a couple of summer drinks and accompanying snacks in town, whether you’re looking for a daytime activity with the kids or a night out with friends.
1. Spaans Huis
Tervuren Park is one of the locals’ favourite places to go for a walk, on a sunny summer’s day as well as on a colourful autumn weekend. It is a place where time seems to have come to a standstill and where nature stands centre stage.
However, during your walk, you might discover a place called Spaans Huis. This former mill is located right in the middle of the park and offers a very welcome place to take a break. Whether you stop by for a simple coffee, an apéritif, or a toasty snack, given the romantic setting, it’s hard to be disappointed. And if you’ve got kids, the dedicated playroom is ideal for them to enjoy some adventures with (new) friends while you enjoy your much-deserved break.
Address: Spaans-Huisdreef 1, 3080 Tervuren
2. Café Jardin
One of the nicest things about the warmer months of the year is those endless, hot summer nights. And while you could choose to enjoy those at home if you’ve got the space, Café Jardin might be a better option if you don’t mind a little party.
Every Friday during June and July, Café Jardin opens its doors to the public, offering the perfect intimate spot to enjoy a bit of quality time with your loved ones or colleagues. From cocktails and tapas to live entertainment, there’s no way you will get bored during your night out.
Address: Kerkstraat 23a, 3080 Tervuren
3. Foyer De Warandepoort
Finding a roomy spot in the city centre, with enough seating both inside and out, can be quite tricky. With its location inside a leisure centre and right next to the market square of Tervuren, Foyer De Warandepoort offers exactly this and quite a bit more.
The brasserie is the perfect spot to enjoy both Belgian dishes and world cuisine in the heart of Tervuren. The courtyard makes for an idyllic place to relax when the weather’s great, while the interior space is ideal when the Belgian weather has decided to play you some tricks, forcing you to seek cover.
Address: Markt 7b, 3080 Tervuren
4. Mokkatoff
When the sun’s out and the temperatures seem almost unbearable, there’s only so much you can do. Aside from a refreshing splash in the pool, enjoying some ice-cold scoops of ice cream is undoubtedly your best option to survive.
Whether you’re into gelato, sorbet, frozen yoghurt, or simply an iced coffee, at Mokkatoff, everyone will find a way to cool down. The assortment is almost endless, and new flavours are regularly added to the menu. Contrary to many ice cream shops, Mokkatoff is open until late at night, making it the perfect stop on your way back from the restaurant.
Address: Brusselsesteenweg 10, 3080 Tervuren
5. Canapé
Cocktails, great food, and an aesthetically pleasing location, what else does one need to enjoy a great evening? Exactly, not much. Especially after a long day at work or a relaxing stroll through the city. Canapé, located in the heart of Tervuren and close to the entrance of the Tervuren Park, has a very international and metropolitan vibe.
The decor of the place – both inside and out – could very well be featured in an interior magazine, while the short but sweet menu takes you on a voyage around the world. And if you can’t get enough, you could even opt to rent out the entire venue for your own private party.
