Variety Cruises has announced its second Mystery Cruise, where passengers embark on a voyage informed only of the departure and arrival points, while everything else remains a surprise.
‘It is the journey that counts’ takes another meaning on these trips offered by Variety Cruise. The upcoming maritime adventure will depart from Valletta, Malta, on 21 June 2025 and conclude in Naples, Italy, eight days later. The precise itinerary is undisclosed, with the company promising an immersive experience that includes ‘uncovering ancient enigmas, savouring delicacies, and surprises lurking at every corner’.
Led by Variety Cruises’ CEO, Philippos Venetopoulos, the true mystery lies in the promises of the unknown: ‘a secret island lost to time? A forgotten fishing village with stories untold? Or perhaps a hidden cove’ as advertised on the company’s website.
The latest version of the Mystery Cruise will take passengers across the Mediterranean Sea, with destinations revealed only after the ship docks. This secrecy sets it apart from traditional cruises. The ship promises to navigate the ‘mysterious depths of Italy and Malta’.
According to the company’s website, passengers will indulge in ‘Mediterranean cuisine, complemented by local wine pairings, and participate in surprise cultural activities designed to enrich their understanding of the regions visited’.
The only clue given to prospective passengers is that the cruise will explore the ‘mysterious depths of Italy and Malta’ with stops at ‘off-the-beaten-path locations, with expert guides offering a deep dive into the history, art, and traditions of the region’.
The vessel, the M/Y Variety Voyager, is a boutique ship with 36 cabins that accommodates 72 guests. The service aboard is personalised and intimate, with all modern amenities to ensure guests’ comfort throughout the cruise.
If the cruise is not for everyone’s pockets (€3,592 per person), it may reassure some to know that all the profits from the cruise are donated to Variety Cares, the company’s non-profit foundation. It supports clean oceans, gender equality, and education.
The price includes accommodations onboard, obviously, half-board meals, with one daily meal featuring local specialities, curated excursions, Wi-Fi access, and the use of fishing and snorkelling equipment. Passengers who book before the end of March can enjoy a 10% discount.
Born in Athens, and a third-generation shipbuilder, Venetopoulos, an NYU graduate, seems to be ahead of the game. His commitment to sustainability, innovative travel experiences and eco-conscious tourism align with a growing demand for unconventional and environmentally responsible cruising.
It should be no surprise then that Variety Cruises appears to be leading the trend of mystery cruises. Would you dare book yourself on the next cruise?
