Cooling off in a city during summer can be a real challenge, especially when a heatwave is in town. And even when there are cool spots available, only locals seem to be able to find them. Paris has found the perfect solution to that problem and has made an interactive map grouping so-called “cool islands”.
With the Olympics, all eyes are currently on the French capital. Domestic and international tourists are enjoying the sports events while also trying to get a glimpse of Parisian life. However, a heatwave is currently ongoing and as we can’t all just jump into the Seine River, other ways of refreshment are very welcome.
The city’s interactive map is available to both tourists and locals and although the English version doesn’t seem to be complete just yet, the French map allows you to find all categories and with a little help of a translation tool, it is fairly easy to understand.
“There are more than 1,400 cooling spots in Paris. These are known as “cooling islands”. These establishments serve as havens of hospitality, offering respite and refreshment, open to all and recognised for providing relief during hot or sweltering conditions. They provide protection from the risks associated with extreme heat, and allow you to enjoy a bit of shade”, the city of Paris explains.
The map comprises all kinds of refreshing spots. Drinking water fountains are clearly indicated, as are cool indoor spots such as museums and churches. Parks can be found on the map as well, together with public swimming pools and shade canopies. With many of them being open 24/7, one can find some refreshment both during the day and at night.

The city has also made a list of recommendations for everyone to follow during the heatwave:
- Wet your body several times a day.
- Drink water regularly.
- Eat enough fruits and vegetables, if possible.
- Limit your alcohol consumption.
- Avoid physical exercise and outings during the hottest hours of the day.
- Keep your home cool by closing the shutters during the day.
- Keep in contact with your loved ones.
