There are many ways to enjoy the winter time and snow – from to being very active and having fun with all kinds of winter sports, relaxing in a spa and hot sauna which is a special pleasure with the low temperatures outside to chilling by the fireplace while sipping hot tea or mulled wine. A small but gorgeous country – Slovenia offers all of this to its winter visitors and so much more. Perfect for a snowy getaway or even longer winter holidays, this mountainous country will just charm you and make you feel like in winter fairytale. Though not very large, Slovenia has many ski resorts where you can indulge in winter sports and we bring you a selection of the top three.
1. Rogla
When talking about winter fun in Slovenia, Rogla is high up on our list – boasting with over 100 days of snow per year, this popular ski resort in the Pohorje Hills is the perfect place to go to for all kinds of activities, no matter which level you are. Easily reachable by car, you can stay in a hotel or rent bungalows that are straight next to the ski paths and you can choose any level of paths you’d like from the 16 available – from very easy baby ones to the difficult ones for more experienced skiers or snowboarders.
If you are up for some freestyle, you can try your tricks at the Rogla Fun Park or also go night skiing on specific days. Trails for ski walking and sledding are also available and one of the things not to miss is definitely the Pohorje Treetop Walk the view from which will leave you absolutely in awe.
2. Vogel Ski Resort
One of the most beautiful natural setting you can experience at Vogel Ski Resort – located inside Slovenia’s only national park, the beautiful Triglav National Park, it offers 18 km of slopes in the pristine nature.
Besides enjoying the traditional winter sports like skiing and snowboarding you can also try freestyle in the snow park or enjoy the view at the snow-covered mountain tops while paragliding. You can also enjoy the spectacular view at Lake Bohinj as well. At the end of the day, treat yourself to delicious traditional dishes – buckwheat dumplings with sour cream are a must!
3. Maribor Pohorje
The ski resort that we can’t miss is Maribor Pohorje, the largest ski center in Slovenia is definitely worth a visit. Located on the outskirt of the city of Maribor, this skiing resort is a trendy spot for everyone who likes to enjoy winter sports.
Easy to reach, it offers over 40 kilometers of beautiful pistes, some of which are open even during the night – namely, Maribor Pohorje is known for one of the longest European night-skiing pistes. If you’re in luck and visit end of January, you can also attend the World Cup women’s alpine ski races, the Golden Fox competition that is very exciting to watch and cheer on.
