When going on a trip, we all hope things go for the best. Even though we should know better by now, there’s still a spark of hope that we’ll actually stick to the planning and come home totally happy and recharged. That perfect image usually fades very quickly – sometimes even before getting to our destination. Maybe it’s traffic, maybe it’s the hotel you chose, maybe it’s a restaurant you went to. We’re only humans, meaning we tend to make some mistakes sooner or later. What we’ve learned over the years? Try to reign in your expectations and it’ll probably turn out for the best.
However, sometimes, that’s easier said than done. Sometimes, you go on a trip with a very particular image in mind. And the more popular the destination or attraction, the bigger your expectations tend to be. And the more you can be disappointed. The reason why is quite simple. Over the years, you might well have seen thousands of impressions of that one very popular place. Instagram, magazines, the internet in general, your family photo album… these days, there are so many information sources that it makes your mind dazzle. And with those impressions, you’ve made a mental image of that place. But, reality check: you tend to only see the positive side of things in pictures, meaning all the bad parts get left out in your imagination. And that’s the ideal recipe for disappointment.
We all do it
Luckily – or sadly? – you’re not the only one functioning that way. We all do it and that’s okay, it just helps when you’re aware of it. Online casino website Mr. Q was curious to find out which popular tourist attractions around the world tend to be the most complained-about. By analysing over 80.000 bad reviews on TripAdvisor, they came up with a list. We’re not sure what you could actually do with this information, other than be wary about these destinations when planning your visit. Unsurprisingly, many of these places are located in the United States, as that might well be one of the countries non-Americans dream about the most.
