As technology in our world advances, saunas have evolved from steamy wooden huts to high-tech locations meant for relaxation. They promise relief from pain, improvement of cardiovascular health, and relaxation, among other benefits. Saunas have been a staple in Nordic cultures for centuries, offering a warm retreat during long winter days. Yet, nowadays, powering these steam rooms comes at the expense of the environment. Therefore, Thermasol, a company based in Texas, has taken action by designing its own solar-powered sauna, called Solaris.
“Solaris is the world’s first fully off-grid, solar-powered sauna in the US – a radiant blend of design, innovation, and sustainability,” said Thermasol. Solaris operates on the “ready-to-use” principle, which can be used in remote or off-grid locations. This makes it suitable for secluded retreats or properties aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and reliance on traditional energy sources.
“We’ve seen growing demand from both homeowners and hospitality clients looking for energy-efficient wellness solutions,” Jennifer Thayer, president of Harvia US, Thermasol’s parent company, told Dezeen.
Most saunas rely on electric heaters or wood-burning stoves. Although these options provide consistent warmth, their carbon footprint is substantial, especially if the electricity comes from non-renewable sources. Moreover, wood-burning saunas release pollutants directly into the air, contributing directly to air pollution.
In contrast, Thermasol’s Solaris uses energy through built-in solar panels integrated into its exterior. The system employs energy-efficient heating cycles that are designed to retain heat longer while using as little energy as possible.
The exterior of the innovative sauna is equipped with solar-tinted glass windows that allow natural light to enter while maintaining personal privacy. Additionally, there are also integrated heater controls to allow users to regulate their temperature. Inside, there are benches and surfaces, reflecting the European design style.
The sauna is available for purchase in two sizes – small, allowing for two or three people, and medium, for four to five people can fit inside. Both models are delivered pre-assembled, allowing the buyers to have a quick setup.
As the world struggles with climate change, this sauna is a step forward for the wellness culture and spa procedures. Renewable energy is one way that could allow wellness to evolve in a way that aligns better with the planet’s needs.
