On 20 March, Singapore will be welcoming the latest addition to its city skyline – a fleet of seven futuristic-looking cable cars, called SkyOrb Cabins. The SkyOrb Cabins are being introduced with the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Singapore Cable Car. They will be joining the existing cable car fleet of 67, connecting Mount Faber and Sentosa Island.
“In 2024, tourism is expected to recover to pre-Covid levels, and we expect to welcome up to 16 million visitors to our shores,” Grace Fu, Minister of Trade Relations, said at the official launch of the SkyOrb cabins on the Mount Faber Line on 15 March.
The SkyOrb Cabins have nothing of a standard cable car. The spherical design finished in chrome reminds resembles something from a sci-fi movie, while the glass bottoms allow tourists to marvel at their surroundings from all angles. Everything has been done to assure travellers on board of the cabins are as comfortable as possible, including double window louvres at the front and triple window louvres at the rear for optimal ventilation. At night, a ring of lights enclosed in the cabin will light up tourists’ journeys and add a romantic aspect to their experience.
“Each SkyOrb cabin, a gleaming chrome orb soaring through the sky, embodies modern design. These cabins offer guests a one-of-a-kind experience, taking them on a discovery between Mount Faber Peak and Sentosa, unveiling breathtaking views along the way”, said Buhdy Bok, managing director of Mount Faber Leisure Group.
A round-trip Cable Car Sky Pass currently costs 35 dollars (32 euros) for adults and 25 dollars (23 euros) for children. Those wanting to ride on one of the SkyOrb Cabins will have to pay an additional 15 dollars (14 euros) per person for a one way trip on weekdays and an additional 20 dollars (18 euros) on weekends and public holidays.
