Since opening back in the 1920s, The Surrey has become an iconic New York hotel. Its convenient location brings people from various backgrounds, including celebrities. However, it was closed in 2020, and now, 4 years later, it has reopened for the public under the governance of Corinthia Hotels.
The building hosts the first New York location of the famous restaurant Casa Tua and features Surrey Spa with Sisley Paris, offering an experience that appeals not only to out-of-town guests but also to locals. The 16-floor building is among Corinthia Hotel’s first properties in North America.
“We are incredibly proud to have our first opening in North America be one as meaningful as The Surrey, an address that has been lying in wait for its next chapter. We see this hotel as a love letter to New York and a beacon of the city’s creative spirit,” said Simon Casson, Chief Executive Officer of Corinthia Hotels.
Owned by Reuben Brothers, the hotel includes 70 guest rooms, 30 suites, 14 private residences, and 4 themed suites, each inspired by Central Park’s remarkable bridges: the Bethesda Grandeur Suite, Pine Bank Bridge Suite, Greywacke Heritage Suite, and The Surrey Suite.
1. A real-life exhibition
Located near several of the city’s most famous museums, the hotel is an interesting concept intertwining art, luxury, and comfort. Surrey’s designers have integrated art into the interior on a different level. Together with Paris-based VISTO Gallery, they have curated an art collection using the city as a main motif. The collection honours the hotel’s history with works crafted by New York’s diverse artists, some of which date back to the 1920s.
The design team, consisting of MBDS London and New York-based designers, combined modern complexity and tradition. The ambiance reflects a cozy, residential feel, honouring New York with features like handcrafted Murano chandeliers and custom-made furniture. Guests can admire works by local artists and international creatives located across the globe with each piece telling a part of the city’s vivid story.
2. A wellness destination
The Surrey Spa by Sisley Paris is the new top-spot wellness destination on the Upper East Side. In collaboration with Sisley, Corinthia Hotels interweaves plant-based ingredients with high-end tech to offer treatments focused on relaxation, anti-aging, and revitalization. The spa offers a variety of Sisley product-based treatments, two treatment rooms, a sauna, a salt relaxation room, an AMP-design gym, and more. Additionally, the spa is connected to a quiet outdoor terrace.
“The Surrey, A Corinthia Hotel, has tapped leading visionaries in dining, spa, design, and architecture to bring a vibrancy to Manhattan’s Upper East Side. We aim to be a cultural mainstay of our neighbourhood and add to the dynamic and ever-evolving tapestry of fashion, creativity, and art that surrounds us,” said Pradeep Raman, Managing Director of The Surrey.
