Severe weather conditions sweeping across the United States (US) East Coast have led to significant disruptions in air travel. According to flight-tracking website, FlightAware, the impact of this storm has resulted in the cancellation of over 1,300 flights in the US with an additional 5,700 flights experiencing delays. These disruptions have been recorded as of 5:30 pm Eastern Time.
Anticipating the intensification of the weather situation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken to social media to issue warnings. The FAA has indicated that it might need to temporarily halt departures from several airports this evening, including those in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Atlanta, as well as the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C., and New York. In an effort to mitigate the effects of the storm, the FAA is actively rerouting flights away from the affected regions along the East Coast.
“The FAA is re-routing aircraft around the storms heading to the East Coast as much as possible. Soon we will likely have to pause departures in and out of East Coast airports”, the FAA stated in its online update.
Travelers who are scheduled to fly into, out of, or through airports located on the East Coast are advised to contact their respective airlines to gain information about potential delays and cancellations. Some airlines have introduced weather-related waivers to provide passengers with increased flexibility when it comes to rebooking their travel plans.
