Mechelen is offering spending money to tourists who come to visit the city this winter. When visitors book two nights’ accommodation to stay between 1 December and 31 January, Visit Mechelen will give them a voucher worth €100 to spend in the city.
Sitting halfway between Antwerp and Brussels on the banks of the Dyle river, Mechelen is rich with Burgandian history and UNESCO heritage. There’s plenty to draw overnight visitors. As well as lovely villages to hike on the outskirts, there are beautiful monuments to see, like St Rumbold’s tower, and never-before-shown masterpieces featuring in the Hidden Gems art exhibition at the Hof van Busleyden. And on a crisp winter’s afternoon, why not tour Mechelen’s famous carillons? What could be more Christmassy than the sound of bells pealing?
As well as bringing the circus to town, the city’s Keeps You Warm season this winter will fill the streets with spectacular fire and flame shows, Christmas markets, cosy Christmas bars and crazy après ski action.
Most shops, restaurants and attractions are accepting the Visit Mechelen spending vouchers, from Het Anker brewery to The Art Hour (Het Kunstuur) and Technopolis.
To take advantage of the offer, visitors must spend two nights at a participating hotel or B&B in Mechelen. You’ll need to book direct and it’s worth being aware that the package (including two stays with breakfast plus €100 spending money per room) varies in price between different hotels. There are only 900 vouchers available, so move fast.
