Brussels Airport, Zaventem, has confirmed a series of 2024 summer slots for Iceland’s low-fare, start-up airline, Play, in what will be the third year in a row for Play flying to and from the Belgian capital.
The seasonal schedule between 28 May and 7 September 2024, will see newcomer, Play, a specialist in routes between Europe and the USA with stopovers in Iceland, operate three flights per week between its hub in Keflavik International, Reykjavik, and Brussels. The flight time between the two cities will be around three hours.
Start-up attitude
With a current fleet of just six Airbus A320neos and four Airbus A321neos, Play is doing well in a market place leaning towards consolidation. It has been recognised as a top low-cost carrier in Northern Europe for its commitment to safety, reliability, and customer enjoyment and is set to inaugurate its first African route to Marrakesh in October 2024.
Largely bankrolled by an investment fund owned by Ryanair’s founder’s grand-daughter, Play shows its lineage with an irreverent and fun attitude to self-promotion that has helped to put the 2021 startup on the aviation sector map. In one example earlier this year, the carrier capitalised on volcanic eruptions that were causing evacuations and resort closures on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsular.
The airline, which passes over the peninsular on take-off and landing at Keflavik, took advantage of its flight path and released images on social media showing the seismic activity from the air. It used the posts to urge people to buy a Play flight to gain a spectacular view of the ice and fire.
Two special offers
Now, to mark the news of a third consecutive year at Brussels Zaventem in its short three-year existence, the airline is celebrating with two more special opportunities for travellers.
The first temptation in store is for anyone eyeing northern destinations this summer. Play has announced bargain air fares starting from a wallet-friendly 69 euros for return flights between the Belgian and Icelandic capitals, available for booking until 15 May. And the second treat on offer? The carrier is inviting flyers to consider pausing for a free extended layover in Iceland when making their way between Europe and its North American destinations.
As well as choosing between US cities Baltimore, Boston, New York, and Washington DC, or Toronto, Canada, adding the proposed stopover of up to 10-days in Iceland effectively gives customers the option of a dual-destination experience, at no extra charge from Play.
