Carnival Cruise Line has added a third ship to its Excel class. The Carnival Jubilee, as the ship will be named, has room for 6,500 passengers and uses an eco-conscious liquefied natural gas technology to reduce emissions. Even though the Jubilee has entered service last December, the official naming will take place on 24 February in Galveston, Texas. Carnival has revealed that three-time Grammy Award winner Gwen Stefani will be honoured as the ship’s godmother.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be welcoming Gwen Stefani onto Carnival Jubilee so we can honour her as the ship’s godmother. She has demonstrated her commitment to our Carnival values, including promoting diversity and inclusion, supporting charitable causes, being a leader in her field, and of course, having fun. We are going to show her an enthusiastic welcome in only the way Carnival can when she joins us on February 24”, said Carnival Cruise Line president Christine Duffy.
The naming ceremony will take place aboard the ship and will be an invitation-only event. Curious outsiders can, however, watch part of the ceremony through Carnival Cruise Line’s Facebook page.
The singer herself seems to be thrilled about the naming as well.Carnival Cruise Line’s dedication to good causes, amongst others through their Carnival Foundation, especially matching her personal beliefs. “I am honoured to be the godmother of the new Carnival Jubilee. Carnival is taking it to the next level of fun while being committed to children’s causes and supporting our military families and veterans”, Gwen Stefani commented on the upcoming event.
Carnival Cruise Line has been in business sine 1972. It is owned by the American-British Carnival Corporation & plc. and operates 26 ships, 3 of which are part of the Excel class. The Mardi Gras and the Carnival Celebration joined the ranks in 2020 and 2022 respectively, while the Carnival Jubilee was first used in 2023. The ships are dually fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and traditional fuel oil, making them more environmentally friendly than traditional diesel ships. Moreover, the Excel class offers extras such as onboard rollercoasters and water slides to its passengers.
