Being a true travel lover is not easy in 2020. There are tons of restrictions due to Covid-19, making it often very difficult to just pack your bags and leave on a holiday. But we are still curious about the world out there and what it has to offer. One of the best ways to do so is by indulging yourself in inspiring pictures, sparking your wanderlust while you are lying safe and sound on your sofa. Of course, Instagram is full of potential travel inspiration, no matter the style you like. From colorful to sepia-toned, there is something to everyone’s taste. Our new personal favorite? Accidentally Wes Anderson.
1. Anderson’s universe
Film lovers will without a doubt know who Wes Anderson is. The American film director is the mastermind behind movies like ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ and ‘Isle of Dogs’, known not only for their intricate plots yet also for the very aesthetically pleasing images. Watching an Anderson-movie is like diving into another universe, where things are always bright, colorful and symmetrical. You would think those images are too good to be true but think again. Even in the real world, there are places that good be coming straight out of Anderson’s world. And that is exactly what Wally Koval wants to show to you.
2. From Instagram…
Koval therefore started an Instagram account named ‘Accidentally Wes Anderson’ in 2017 which has proven to be very successful over the years. More than 1 million people are following the account and that number keeps on growing. Asked about how he selects his pictures, Koval told Creative Review: “I don’t think there is a concrete way of defining it, simply because I think it kind of goes beyond just the characteristics we might list. I see it more as a little amorphous, you just kind of know it when you see it. I think that makes it all the more fun when you happen upon it in real life, especially when you are walking down the street and you see something that just catches your eye.”
3. … to an actual book
Because of its great success, Koval has now released a book, gathering the most stunning pictures he has come across. The images and the stories that go with them were taken both by professional photographers and amateurs with a love for photography but they all share a passion for Wes Anderson’s universe. The film maker even wrote a foreword himself: “The photographs in this book were taken by people I have never met, of places and things I have, almost without exception, never seen – but I must say: I intend to. Wally Koval and his collaborators have put together both a very entertaining collection of images and also an especially alluring travel guide (at least in the opinion of this actual Wes Anderson).”
If it is good enough for Anderson, it is good enough for us. That is why we made a selection of five places featured on the Instagram account that make us want to pack our bags and leave. Straight away.
